Bristol Zoo - Bear Wood Boardwalk
Bristol Zoo - Bear Wood Boardwalk
An impressive elevated boardwalk at Bristol Zoo's Bear Wood attraction has been constructed using over 17,000 linear metres of anti-slip timber decking supplied by Gripsure.
Set within 7.5 acres of ancient woodland, Bear Wood offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the history of Britain's forests, taking them on a journey from 10,000 years ago to the present day. The attraction is home to several species that once roamed British woodlands, including European brown bears, European grey wolves, Eurasian lynxes and wolverines.
The extensive boardwalk elevates visitors above the forest floor, providing panoramic views of the surrounding woodland and its wildlife while creating an accessible and engaging experience.
A Decking Solution Designed for Safety, Durability and Accessibility
Working closely with the zoo, Gripsure developed a decking specification that would meet the demands of a busy visitor attraction while complementing the natural woodland environment.
Gripsure's Classic anti-slip decking profile was selected to meet several key requirements:
- Long-term durability: Timber treated in accordance with National Highway Sector Scheme 4 requirements, with a specified 30-year treatment classification, to withstand the damp woodland environment.
- Sustainably sourced materials: FSC-certified timber was selected to support responsible sourcing and complement the natural surroundings.
- Enhanced slip resistance: Three integrated anti-slip inserts provide additional grip underfoot, helping to reduce the risk of slips in wet conditions and high-footfall areas.
- Improved accessibility: The smooth decking profile provides a comfortable surface for wheelchair users and pushchairs, while also making routine cleaning and maintenance easier.
- Efficient installation: Decking boards were cross-cut to the required boardwalk width, helping to minimise waste and streamline the installation process.
Bringing the Woodland Story to Life
Beyond providing a safe and durable walking surface, the decking also plays an important role in the attraction's educational experience.
Bespoke Gripsure Graphics were incorporated into the boardwalk, creating interactive interpretation features that guide visitors through the history of British woodlands. Custom-designed graphics, including root-inspired details surrounding 'Steve the Tree', help illustrate the changing landscapes, habitats and wildlife found throughout the UK's forests.
The completed project demonstrates how carefully specified timber decking can combine safety, accessibility, sustainability and creative design to deliver an engaging visitor experience within a sensitive natural environment.
